Working on some personal goals for 2025 and drinking more water is top of the list for me. I am the worst about water. I can work from the second my kids leave from school until they get home, which is just under eight hours. And I realize I don't even stop to take a bathroom break most days. That is horrible. I know, I know I'm not hydrated enough 'cause I don't like the taste of water that much. Enter Aqua AquaTru. AquaTru purifiers use a four stage reverse osmosis purification process that removes 15 times more contaminants than ordinary picture filters, which is awesome, but you end up with water that actually tastes good. AquaTru has water purifiers to fit every type of home from installation free countertop purifiers to higher capacity under sync options. They even have a wifi connected purifier and mineral boost options. And the AQUA true filters are affordable and long lasting. So there's no change in the filters every two to three months because the aqua true filters, they last from six months up to two years. And just one set of filters from their classic purifier, it makes the equivalent of 4,500 bottles of water. So it works out to less than 3 cents a bottle. Not to mention the environmental impact that you have by not wasting tons of extra plastic. We just installed ours. And as a former water hater, I do have to say the AquaTru water tastes fantastic and you don't have to worry about PFAS or other harmful contaminants. I had it delivered straight to my home and it was really easy to set up. AquaTru comes with a 30 day money back guarantee. It even makes a great gift. Katie Ferraro (3m 31s):

Now, if you're someone who just loves different colored baby stuff, then you're gonna have to go with the Tripp Trapp over the Nomi, 'cause at this point there's 12 different colors of the Tripp Trapp. With the Nomi, they've really streamlined the SKUs and now there's two different colors of wood that you can get. Three different colors of the plastic seat and the footrest. So not as many color options, but definitely a lot of benefits to using the lighter weight. Nomi. Hey there. I'm Katie Ferraro, registered dietitian, college nutrition professor and mom of seven specializing in baby-led weaning here on the Baby- Led Weaning with Katie Ferraro podcast. I help you strip out all of the noise and nonsense about feeding, giving you the confidence and knowledge you need to give you baby a safe start to Solid Foods using baby-led weaning.

Katie Ferraro (4m 20s):

When it comes to choosing a high chair for starting solid foods, things can get overwhelming real fast. Like what features really matter? And will this chair be something that I can use for the foreseeable future? Is my baby just gonna grow out of it really quickly? In this podcast episode, I wanna compare and contrast two of my favorite highchairs for baby-led weaning, both of which are sold by the brand Stokke. So Stokke spelled S-T-O-K-K-E is a Scandinavian company that makes both the Tripp Trapp by Stokke and the Stokke Nomi High chairs. So both of these chairs were designed by the same gentleman, Peter Opsvik. He's a noted Scandinavian furniture designer who really brought form and function to the table for babies among many other things throughout his story career.

Katie Ferraro (5m 4s):

But as the story goes, Peter Opsvik designed the Tripp Trapp high chair for his own child when he realized that there were no high chairs, that he could have his baby come up to the table and join the family for meals. And that's, you know, one of the tenets of baby-led weaning so long before baby-led weaning was even a feeding philosophy. Peter Opsvik was on board with this idea of like, let's have our babies eat at the table with a rest of the family. So the Tripp Trapp highchair has been around since 1972. And if you look up a picture of it or you know what I'm talking about, it has this very iconic look like I would describe the Tripp Trapp as kind of looking like a bit of a wooden ladder. Now the other highchair that we're gonna compare and contrast in this episode is the Nomi high chair.

Katie Ferraro (5m 45s):

So it's also designed by Peter Opsvik, but the Nomi is Opsvik's Modern take on the high chair. So basically Opsvik designed the Nomi high chair for his grandchildren. So the Tripp Trapp was the one he did in 1972 for his own kids. And then the Nomi is much more modern. It does have that more modern aesthetic. So historically the Nomi has been significantly more expensive than the Tripp Trapp. Stokke recently assumed the rights to sell the Nomi in the United States. They've really streamlined the number of SKUs, they've reduced the price a bit, but we're gonna do a comparison. The Nomi is still a little bit pricier than the Tripp Trapp and we're gonna talk about why. But you might be like, I'm sorry, I'm not interested in spending that much for a highchair, but I want you to hang with me because your highchair is the most important piece of equipment that you will buy related to starting solid foods.

Katie Ferraro (6m 32s):

I can't tell you how many families kind of get a rocky start to solid foods because they don't have a good safe highchair that fits their baby. And then when they switch to either a Tripp Trapp or a Nomi, it does make all of the difference in the world. Another thing is for parents who are balking at, you know the price tag on a safe seat for their baby to eat. Take a look at your stroller system. We have parents that are paying $1200-$1,500 for a stroller. Are you at the six month mark still using that stroller three times a day? No, probably not. You can sell your fancy expensive stroller and get a couple hundred bucks that you can invest back into buying a safe seat where your baby's going to eat. And one thing that I love about both the Tripp Trapp and the Nomi highchair is that they grow with your child.

Katie Ferraro (7m 14s):

And we're gonna talk about some of the features that you wanna look for in highchair when you're looking for one for baby-led weaning and with particular to the Tripp Trapp and the Nomi. Do those chairs have these features? One of them is the ability to grow with your child. You don't wanna have to be buying a different chair every couple of years. Now instead of going through each chair one by one, I wanna go through the features and then compare the Tripp Trapp with the Nomi. So real quick difference between each of them. The Tripp Trapp is that older one from 1972 looks like a wooden ladder designed for Peter Opsvik kids, the Nomi way more modern aesthetic designed for his grandkids. So let's start with the Tripp Trapp. As far as the design goes, the Stokke Tripp Trapp highchair is made from solid European Beachwood.

Katie Ferraro (7m 56s):

It nets out to about 17 pounds when you have the baby set and the tray on. And I'll explain what those are in a second, but it's really got this kind of timeless classic design. As far as the colors go, I am huge sucker for multicolored options of a lot of kids and they kind of all are color coded. So the Tripp Trapps are amazing 'cause there's 12 different colors. So I have seven kids. We have the Tripp Trapp in seven different colors. I also have seven Nomis in my house, which you might be like that's excessive. But we use the Nomis at our breakfast table. And then in our dining room, I have Tripp Trapps. My kids use them even as school age kids now on a daily basis, feet resting flat on a solid foot plate. That's so important for your baby to promote a safe swallow. But it also really helps with older kids.

Katie Ferraro (8m 36s):

I know for my kids when they're doing their homework, if their feet are resting flat, it really helps 'em to focus and concentrate even for the kids that are really kind of fidgety. So we're using these chairs still to this day. I mean our Tripp Trapps, my oldest is 10 and so I've been using them for at least 10 years. I use them also daily for my infant feeding practice. I like the color options in the Tripp Trapp. There's 12 different colors, so I'll read off what they are. But like any brand that has something that's orange in baby colors, I like absolutely love it. Like it's the least frequent color you can find in baby stuff is orange. But one of my quadruplets is, so when they came home from the nicu, they, I was so nervous I was gonna mix the quadruplets up that they had different color coated car seats and one of our boys was orange.

Katie Ferraro (9m 18s):

So there's blue, red, orange and green and like to this day it's kind of stuck with them as their colors less so now that they're older. But we have an orange Tripp Trapp and I absolutely love it. They call it terracotta, but there's a natural color, black, white, there's pink, there's a white wash, which is to me looks like white. Actually, my friend has the white one. I'm like, why do you have a white Tripp Trapp? And he's like, oh, 'cause I like to see where the dirt is. It makes it easier to clean. I'm like, Ooh, I like a darker one where I can't see the food dirt, but something for everyone. There's an oak natural color storm gray, serene pink, fjord blue. You gotta remember this is a Scandinavian company, glacier Green, that terracotta, which is orange, and then an oak warm brown. So I have seven different colors of them. I mean they maintain their quality. The thing about the tripp trapp is because it's been around for so long, you can usually find them on the used marketplace.

Katie Ferraro (10m 2s):

So I bought a couple of these used. You tend to find them more like basic colors used. If you want one of the crazier like pink colors, etc, they're available on the Stokke website. But as far as the design goes of the Tripp Trapp, it has this baby guard. Okay? So you can basically use it without the tray and pull your baby up to the table, right? Just as it was designed. It comes with a harness. And I'll cover how that's changed a little bit in a second. But one of the things about the tripp trapp is that it comes standard without a tray. So the tray is extra. And sometimes parents are like, oh my gosh, that's so annoying. But you have to remember, if you have a regular height table, you don't need a tray, you pull your baby right up to the table. Now if you have a counter or a bar height table or you like to eat outside, you will need the tray. And I'll tell you in a second some tricks for getting that tray.

Katie Ferraro (10m 46s):

I want to compare next though, the design of the Nomi compared to the Tripp Trapp. The Nomi design way more modern, okay? It's got this wooden stem that has plastic components. So a plastic seat, a plastic back, and then a plastic footrest. It's a lighter structure because it's got that plastic in there, whereas the Tripp Trapp weighs 17 pounds with the baby set and the tray on the Nomi clocks in it about 13 pounds, about four pounds lighter. I definitely notice it. I don't think the Tripp Trapp is heavy, but you move these things around a clean, you notice it. But anyway, they're both like very, very reasonable. These aren't big, clunky, heavy high chairs. The Nomi has a minimalist aesthetic and it comes in less color options than the Tripp Trapp does. The Nomi used to come in lots of colors. So prior to Winka had the rights to sell it, there was a different company that had the distribution rights in the US and they had tons of different skews, so many different colors.

Katie Ferraro (11m 32s):

I had a pink one and an orange one and a green one. All that is gone now. What you can buy now is three different colors of plastic. So the seat color, the footrest in the back can be white, gray or black. And then there's two different colors of wood, oak or natural. So one of the cool things is like to match whatever the design or the decor in your house is. You can mix and match and pick different colors of wood if you'd like to match, you know, whatever your other furniture is. This is a very like good looking high chair I I would argue it's the nicest piece of furniture in my house or our Nomi high chairs. The benefits of both of these high chairs is they have adjustable footrest and adjustable seats. I mentioned that adjustable footrest is so important for helping to support a safe swallow. If your baby's feet are resting flat on a solid foot plate, it stabilizes your baby's core and helps facilitate a safe swallow.

Katie Ferraro (12m 17s):

So any chair you're looking at should have an adjustable footrest. But bonus brownie points if it has an adjustable seat, the Nomi also comes with a baby guard. So same as the Tripp Trapp, your baby can eat without the tray be pulled right up to the table. But the Nomi is the same as the Tripp Trapp in the sense that the tray costs extra. So it's an extra $70 for the tray for both of these high shares. And that kind of peeves some appearance.

Stokke (12m 40s):

But if you're interested in either of these high shares, I do have an offer where you can get the tray for free. So it's a $70 value and you can get that tray for free if you buy it on the Stokke website. So it's S-T-O-K-K-E. If you use the code BABYLED, when you're checking out, it will make the $70 tray free. So if you're buying this highchair, you might as well get the tray for free using that code BABYLED. So as far as the design of both of these highchairs go, the takeaway, if you're into the classic style with a smaller footprint, you're gonna wanna look at the Tripp Trapp. If you have more of a modern aesthetic and you're looking for a lighter chair, go with the Nomi. It's certainly more portable, a little bit easier to move around the house. Like it's definitely my outdoor chair. Like if we're gonna eat outside, I just pick up the Nomis and go outside. You do need the tray if you're eating outside though. And again, that code is BABYLED at the Stokke website. If you wanna get the trays for free when you buy either the Tripp Trapp or the Nomi, if you are a fiend for like different color baby stuff and you want more color options, then you're gonna have to go with the Tripp Trapp because there's 12 different color options compared to just three with the Nomi.

Katie Ferraro (13m 49s):

Hey, we're gonna take a quick break, but I'll be right back. Okay, I wish this were not true, but as someone who works in front of a computer or a phone all day, I know that of the average 20,000 breaths that Americans take a day, 90% of those and 90% of our time is being spent indoors. And the indoor air that we breathe can be up to a hundred times more polluted than outdoor air according to the EPA. And indoor air pollutants can lead to respiratory symptoms like sneezing, congestion, scratchy throat, or even more serious health problems like lung and heart disease. So what can we do about it?

Airdoctor (14m 25s):

Well, air doctor has thought a lot about this and they've put their technology to work for you. The air doctor is an air purifier that filters out 99.99% of dangerous contaminants so that your lungs don't have to. So this includes allergens, pollen, pet dander, which is a huge problem in my house, as well as dust mites, mold spores, and even bacteria and viruses. Air doctor comes with a 30 day money backed guarantee. So if you don't love this product, you can just send it back for a refund minus shipping. If you head to air doctor pro.com and you use the promo code weaning, you can get up to $300 off air purifiers. And this is exclusive to podcast listeners, but you will also receive a free three year warranty on any unit, which is an additional $84 value. You can lock up this special offer by going to A-I-R-D-O-C-T-O-R-P-R-O.com. That's air dr pro.com and use the code weaning W-E-A-N-I-N-G To get started today.

Katie Ferraro (15m 34s):

What about safety considerations? So as I mentioned, both of the Nomi and the Tripp Trapp have adjustable foot rests and seat rests. You know why that is important for supporting a safe swallow? Both of them have a baby set on it. And so when your highchair, when these chairs are in the baby configuration with the baby set on, you can't change the height of the seat. Okay? You put the seat at the highest level, but you can adjust the footrest. So if you have a taller baby, you put the footrest down. If you have a smaller baby, it goes up as your baby grows, you put the footrest down and eventually when they become a toddler and no longer fit in the baby set, generally around the 15 to 18 month mark is when your baby will be too big to sit in the baby set. You remove the baby set and it becomes a toddler chair and then it becomes a bigger kid chair.

Katie Ferraro (16m 16s):

As far as the footrest settings go, the Tripp trapp footrest, it kind of has slats where you slide the footrest and you slide the seat into, there are 13 different settings. Each of them are one and a half inches apart. So that's important 'cause babies don't grow in one and a half inch increments. So it's not always gonna exactly fit your baby perfectly, but it's much, much better than many of the other options out there. As far as high chairs go, one of the drawbacks to the Tripp Trapp is it does require an Allen wrench. So that's a tool. It comes with the chair, but you have to not lose it and remember where it is because when it comes time to change the footrest and the seat height, you have to get the Allen wrench out and that's kind of a pain. I have to be honest, it's one of my husband's least favorite chores. But I ask him to change the footrests and the seat heights on our chairs as our kids are growing or to change it back if we have babies coming over eating out of these.

Katie Ferraro (17m 3s):

So that's one of the things that's not great about the chair. But all in all, it's kind of a small price to pay for an incredible chair. Now in the nomi there's unlimited different settings for the footrest height and the seat height. So because it's kind this infinite scroll on the wooden stem, you can put the footrest exactly where you need it for your baby's current height. And the biggest pro to the nomi, I would say when I got this, it was like a game changer. It was like, oh my gosh. It does not require tools to change the footrest and the seat height. So the takeaway is if you're interested in saving time and you don't want tools to change the footrest and seat height of your baby's chair, which you are going to be doing frequently as they grow. In order to ensure safe seating position, you gotta go with the Nomi because it doesn't require tools.

Katie Ferraro (17m 46s):

Let's take a look at longevity. Like how long are these chairs going to last you? For both the Nomi and the Tripp Trapp are designed to grow with your child from infancy into adolescence. As I mentioned, I use both of these chairs in my house regularly for infant feeding at work and also for feeding my older kids. They both convert from toddler to big kid chairs back into high chairs in the same amount of time. I would say except you need the tools that Alan wrench for the Tripp Trapp. So that's what's gonna slow you down is actually having to get the tools out. As far as weight goes, the Tripp Trapp supports up to 242 pounds. I sit on them regularly. I use it as a step stool around my kitchen to reach into high cabinets. The Nomi supports up to 300 pounds. I actually sit on a Nomi as my desk chair on a daily basis take away.

Katie Ferraro (18m 30s):

I think the Nomi wins because it converts back into a high chair or from a highchair to a toddler chair without tools. So meaning it's gonna save you time. How about the ability to clean both of these highchair? What's the difference? Well, starting solid foods, as you know, is messy. The goal is not to prevent the mess, but you're gonna clean this highchair multiple times a day. So you know the ability to clean it efficiently is a consideration. Let's look at the Tripp Trapp, the wooden surface, super easy to wipe down. It does have a cushion that you can buy extra. It's a total pain to clean and stains really easily if you get the light colored cushion. People ask me if you need the cushion. It is not developmental. It is purely aesthetic. It's fine for your baby's butt to be sitting on a wooden plate. They have a lot of fat on their butt to pad their butt. They don't need a cushion.

Katie Ferraro (19m 11s):

I say if you like doing extra laundry, then get the cushion. But other than that, I, I'm not a huge fan of the Tripp Trapp or the Nomi cushion. The Nomi chair certainly has fewer crevices than the Tripp Trapp, so it's kind of easier to wipe down and clean the plastic seat. And the footrest on the nomi, they're resistant to dent and chips. I mean, food does get stuck in the wooden slot in the stem of the nomi, but food also gets stuck in the wooden S slots of the tripp trapp. Like there's no way around it. Food's gonna get stuck there, try to clean up the food mess when it's wet, as opposed to letting it dry. So take away both of the chairs are annoying to clean 'cause it's annoying to clean after babies eat, but weigh less so than other high chairs because there are less crevices in both of these chairs.

Katie Ferraro (19m 52s):

Let's compare the straps and the harness on both of the chairs. So both the Nomi and the Tripp Trapp come standard with a five point harness. Until recently, I would've said that the Nomi harness and strapped by far went out. But Stokke recently updated the Tripp Trapp baby set to what they now call the baby set two. So it's the new plastic guard that has a new harness with updated straps. The new harness is amazing. The straps are wipe clean. They have a one touch release harness. The old straps were so brittle and hard to clean and impossible to remove. And to be honest, a lot of families just weren't using them. They're like these straps are a pain in the neck. Stokke a listened and release the updated baby set two that now comes standard in the Tripp Trapp. So I would say it's kind of a wash.

Katie Ferraro (20m 32s):

With regard to the straps and the harness, they're both awesome. I think it's even the same one-touch release harness. They kind of streamline that design. How about accessories? Both the chi chairs have a range of accessories. They have a newborn set, which I think is kind of silly unless you wanna like attach your bouncer to the highchair. But some people are into that or some people will buy it and be like, oh, for the next baby I'll buy the bouncer set. If you buy the highchair configuration of both of these, they come standard with the baby set. So that's what you use starting from six months of age until about 15 or 18 months when your baby doesn't fit. As I mentioned, the tray is extra. So both of these chairs were designed to be used without a tray. But for families with a bar height or a counter height table, the height chairs don't go up that high.

Katie Ferraro (21m 12s):

So you do need a tray, or if you like to eat outside or move around, you're gonna want the tray. Again, it's $70 to get the tray. But if you buy the Tripp Trapp or the Nomi on the KO website, you can get the $70 tray for free when you use the code BABYLED at checkout. So you put the highchair in your cart, put the tray in your cart, enter the code BABYLED and you'll see the $70 drop off, which is quite a significant savings. So let's talk a little bit about price. Oftentimes parents will balk at the higher price point of one of these highchairs, but often say, you know, how often are you using that $1,500 stroller system that you have? Are you using that three times a day? No. Why don't you sell that? Get a cheaper, more affordable stroller system that you use once a day if that, and put that money into buying a safe seat for your baby to eat.

Katie Ferraro (21m 57s):

You have to feed this person for the next 17 and a half years of its life. You might as well make the investment now in a seat that you're going to use three or more times a day that you can use up and through adolescence. So as far as pricing goes, these are prices as of December, 2024. The Tripp Trapp by itself, the regular price is $299. And then if you add the tray, that makes it about $378. Now remember, you can get the $70 tray for free bringing the price point to about $300 for the Tripp Trapp alone, the Nomi used to be way more expensive. It was like upwards of $400. But SKA has kind of, as I mentioned, removed a lot of those SKUs with the different colors it brought the price down.

Katie Ferraro (22m 43s):

The highchair alone is $319. The highchair with the tray is $390. Okay? So again, the code BABYLED, we'll get that $70 tray for free if you're looking at this, but you're gonna be paying around $300 US for that chair. Pro tip, if you're looking at the Tripp Trapp, because they've been around since 1972, there's lots of them on the used market. I've gotten a lot of Tripp Trapps for friends around 70 to $90 on Facebook marketplace or offer up. So just set an alert. 'cause they do come up pretty often and they hold their value. So that's a steal if you can get it. Now, if you get an older Tripp Trapp, you can actually buy the new baby set, the baby set too, and it affixes to the old Tripp Trapp. So you can get rid of those crappy straps and for a hundred bucks you can get the new baby set too.

Katie Ferraro (23m 28s):

To add to your Tripp Trapp, if you do buy the new baby set too on the Stokke website @stokke.com, that same code BABYLED, that actually works for a free cushion. So if you're interested in the cushion and you like that sort of thing, if you're buying the baby set too, add the cushion to your cart, enter the code BABYLED and that cushion, which is about I think $60 at this point, ends up being free. Now what if you wanna save money and buy Esto highchair, but you don't wanna pay $300? Well, you might stumble upon the Stokke click that STO a's much cheaper high chair. It's priced at $179, but the click is not on my list of strongly recommended highchair for a few reasons. Okay, I have this chair and I use it sometimes, but I do not love it.

Katie Ferraro (24m 10s):

First of all, it doesn't have an adjustable foot rest. It says it has an adjustable foot footrest. Okay? But the materials in the click, they're also far inferior to the Tripp Trapp than Nomi. The footrest just pops out and flips over. So there's literally only two different height levels that it goes to and they're four inches apart. Like babies do not grow in four inch increments. You're definitely gonna have to modify this footrest and I use it for families that already have this chair. You can put a book or a box or a yoga block to elevate the footrest so your baby's feet reach. I also just wanna point out that the knobs on the click on my footrest, they broke after changing the height of the footrest like three times. So it's just not as well of a made product as the Tripp Trapp or the nomi. I'm actually really surprised that stroka makes it 'cause it's just not a great high chair.

Katie Ferraro (24m 53s):

Now the click does come standard with the tray, but you can't remove it and pull your baby up to the table. So it is not ideal for baby-led weaning. Stokke refers to the click as their quote unquote travel chair, but I think that's kind of laughable because it's a pretty big chair. Now you can break the legs off. They click out, you click the tray off, you click the chair off and you click the foot rest off and then it breaks down and you can put it in this storage bag that is sold separately. It's still a huge travel chair. So I see the click working. If you have an Airbnb or a rental house, or this is Grandma's house who only uses the high chair on occasion and then wants to store it away in the travel bag. But I do not recommend the click for everyday use, but I know there are families that are hell Ben on like, I'm getting otoka and I don't wanna pay above $300.

Katie Ferraro (25m 38s):

If you do decide to buy the click, you can get that otoka click travel bag. So it's a $34 value. You can get it for free. If you buy the click highchair on the otoka website and you use that same code Baby Lead, it will make the Stokke Click Travel bag, that $34 bag, it'll make it free when you check out. So you wanna have the travel bag for sure, so you can break it down and put it away when you're not using it. So in summary, both the Stokke Tripp Trapp and the Nomi High chairs, they're fabulous for baby-led weaning. They're both designed to grow with your child. They offer durability and style. The choice between the two really depends on your individual preferences. You know, if you're a modernist person who likes that, like clean, sleek design and aesthetic, you're gonna wanna go with the nomi.

Katie Ferraro (26m 18s):

If you're a traditionalist and you like the smaller footprint with that wooden look, you're gonna go with the Tripp Trapp. If you wanna see these chairs in action, if you go to my YouTube channel, I've got a playlist all about high chairs. I do comparing and contrasting, showing them to you all the different price points. I really only recommend five highchair for baby-led weaning. So I like to narrow the list down and give you not a lot of options, but it is gonna cost you more than the $20 IKEA highchair. So again, this is something you gotta feed your baby in three times a day or more. I think it's worth it to invest in a safe seat where your baby will eat. If you go to youtube.com/babyledweaning, you can see all of those videos. And if you're on the Stokke website looking for the Know me or the Tripp Trapp, remember the Code BABYLED, we will get you the $70 tray for free.

Katie Ferraro (27m 2s):

And if you decide on the cheaper click, then the code BABYLED works. To get that $34 click Stokke travel bag for free, I'll put the links to the different highchair plus the codes in the description below where you're listening. But it'll also be in the show notes, which you can find at blwpodcast.com/490. Thank you so much for listening and a special thank you to our partners at AirWave Media.
